What Does the MUN Do?
In our world of interconnectedness and complex geopolitical issues, bringing nations together to make rules for global governance is a challenging task. The United Nations (UN), a global entity that brings nations together to cooperate on matters of international importance, serves as a role model.
The UN has numerous specialized bodies, including the WHO, UNESCO, UNFCCC, and FAO, which work on diverse matters of importance. Each body has various committees where members negotiate and bring solutions to complex issues.
For students, the UN would be a great platform for learning negotiation, persuasion, public speaking, critical thinking, etc. Alas, the UN doesn’t allow children to participate in its committee. This is where the Fairgaze Model United Nations, or MUN, helps students.
The MUN
The FairGaze MUN is a replica of the United Nations, where students gain firsthand experience of the global body. The MUN simulates the workings of the UN, its conferences, and delegate meetings. Students can gain experience in public speaking, negotiating, document drafting, critical thinking, and the ability to persuade.
What does MUN do?
In the Model United Nations, participating students become delegates, debate on the given issues, draft a resolution, vote on it, and finalize the resolution. The MUN does the following for students:
Improves Research Skills
After registering for a Model United Nations conference, the student is assigned a portfolio (a country a delegate represents). Then, a topic for the agenda is provided, on which the delegate must write a position paper and submit it before an MUN conference.
To write a position paper, students must research the topic and put forward valid points. Proper research will enable the delegate to debate effectively at the conference. Thus, MUN enhances research skills by getting students to delve deeper into an issue.
Develops Writing Skills
After the research, students must present their understanding and the portfolio’s stance in the position paper. This requires effective writing skills.
The students must present their views concisely. By using proper words, accurate facts, appropriate examples, and innovative ideas, delegates can make their text intriguing and score points. MUN thus pushes the students to develop their writing skills.
Builds Confidence
The MUN conference is a large gathering of bright students from across the country. It enables knowledge sharing, appreciating cultural diversity, acknowledging various viewpoints, and more. Students participating in such conferences gain confidence.
With the conference’s design, where every delegate must speak, the MUN eliminates stage fright from a student’s mind. The ability to present a view and stick to it amid raging debate also boosts the student’s self-confidence. The Model United Nations is thus a confidence-building platform that enables students to become future world leaders.
Enables Teamwork
Every student is assigned a portfolio, and with multiple delegates working for the portfolio, a team of delegates participates in the MUN conference. This teaches students about teamwork.
The arguments at the debates must be coordinated between the team members. They need to discuss and make snap decisions to defend their stance. All these necessitate effective communication with the team, enabling students to learn teamwork.
Develops Critical Thinking
As Model United Nations conferences discuss real issues, a student must analyse the topic from diverse angles. The student needs to synthesise the available information, question everything, and bring effective solutions. As such, MUN helps develop critical thinking among students.
Forging Leadership
Above all, the Model United Nations conference is a platform for students to bring out their best leadership abilities. Leading a team, framing the arguments, defending them, calling for Point of Order, coordinating with the team, all forge leadership abilities in a student.
