Writing a MUN Position Paper

09-Nov-2020

MUN Position Paper is a document of one page normally presenting a stance of your country on that topic which your committee will be discussing.

There should be three parts in any good position paper which are Country’s position, Country’s relation, and Country’s Proposal.

Good research and strategic analysis are required to draft a great position paper. The winning and losing can depend totally on how your position paper reflects the resolution and your country.

Position paper holds a great significance as it makes committee understand that the thoughts of students as well as how appropriately the message has been delivered to the chair.

It should be written in a way that it reflects all the goals and each paragraph must be transitioned nicely.

Begin with introducing the reader with your point of view and opinion about the topic. You can start with a brief history of the topic the committee will be discussing. Add your point of vide and opinion about the challenge faced by the global community. Meet this challenge by the end of the position paper.

You need to frame the problem in relation with all other countries as well. This will help in getting support from other countries as well to join your solution.

You can also discuss the previous successes and failures of the policies. Remember not to repeat the factual information which is not in relation to your introduction.

Sometimes, you may also require a fourth paragraph as a supporting material which will cover all other additional angles other than the main three. Take it as a case study where hard data is needed to support paragraph 2 or justify paragraph 3.

Then, you must provide an outline of possible solutions which your country proposes. These solutions would advocate implementing during the Model UN simulation.

Also take into consideration the limits of what your particular committee can do or is willing to do regarding the resolution you have proposed.

In case, you need any additional actions which are beyond the mandate of your committee, you can also outsource them to other committees. If this is an integral part of your strategy they should also go here.

Following these steps, you will be able to write a good position paper.

Sometimes, the secretariat gives rules on the evaluation of Position Papers, however, chair fills the gaps between the secretariat’s instructions and doing the job in real-time.
